We have formal links with animal charities in The Netherlands and Germany.
If you find an abandoned dog, check with the vet, & if it doesn’t have a microchip,
there is a strong chance that we can find a new home either here in Spain or in other European countries
It is so important that you are prepared to foster it for a short time – we have very few kennel spaces that we reserve for absolute Emergencies!
Maybe you will volunteer to foster a dog.

This document seek to explain what happens.

Here are the steps we follow:-

1. If it is important to you, then tell me what kind of dog(s) you will foster – male/female, large/small, puppy/adult

2. We organise together how you will get the animal.

3. I send you (by email) a Dog Information Form, which you download, save as a document and then fill out as much detail as possible in answer to the questions & email back to me. The more information you can offer, the quicker we can home the animal.

4. You also send me several digital photos, showing the dog with and without a human (gives an accurate impression of the dog’s size to be photographed with a human) People need to see the face clearly. Black dogs need a very light background. Some of the best photos come when you are on a level with the animal – either by putting it on a table or by you kneeling.

5. I distribute the form and the photos to our various partners in Holland and Germany as well as putting them on the CAS webpage. This I do daily.

6. Usually, more questions are asked of you as the days go by or when someone is interested in offering a home. It is SO helpful if you send regular updates – anything is interesting for potential homers.

7. Please make sure I know your phone numbers and the area in which you live.

8. Especially when I work with the Dutch charity, they alert me to apply to the dog the status of Reserved Pending Home Visit. This means that you must agree to keep the dog for five days even if someone here in Spain wants to offer a home.

9. Volunteers from HzH (the Dutch charity) will then visit the family in The Netherlands who have offered a home.

10. If the Home Visit is successful, the dog will be designated as - Homed Awaiting Flight.

11. HzH do all they can to find someone who will accompany the dog to Holland (or sometimes to a contiguous German airport) & a flight that has space in the hold for a dog cage.
This may take a couple of weeks.

12. CAS & HzH provide the travel cage and will arrange with you to do the following procedures (normally by our vet in Nerja) – an HzH microchip is inserted; all vaccinations are up to date and the dog is neutered. The neutering operation must be done 3 weeks before the flight of a bitch or ten days before the flight of a male dog.

13. I will maintain close contact by email & phone with you during the whole period of this process.

14. Between us, we will get the dog to the airport for its flight and either I or another CAS volunteer will be there to complete the arrangements.

15. You will then receive copies of all the photos we always get from their new homes…as well as seeing the dog that you saved featured on our Blog. (www.cas-nerja.blogspot.com)
